CLINTON, NY - Goals by
Meghan MacDonald and
Andrea DelGiudice in the span of three minutes gave #3 Tufts Field Hockey a 2-0 victory on the road over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first three quarters in which Tufts was in control of the play, MacDonald's goal with 10 minutes left in the game gave the Jumbos a 1-0 lead. The goal came after DelGiudice made a good run down the right side of the field and fed the ball into the middle. It got knocked around until MacDonald got to it and put it in the back of the goal for her second of the season.
Less than three minutes later, the Jumbos were awarded a penalty corner. This allowed
Mia D'Angelo to find
Reegan McCluskey at the top of the circle. McCluskey was able to control it and pass to DelGiudice on the left wing and her shot got past the Continentals' goalie for a two-goal Tufts advantage.
Even though the first half ended scoreless, Tufts had the much better opportunities as they out-shot Hamilton 9-0 along with having a corner advantage of 7-0. In the first quarter, the Jumbos'
Claire Gavin had made a good run and was one-on-one with Hamilton goalie Abby Griffin, but Griffin was able to come up with two good saves. Later on in the first quarter, the Jumbos had the ball inside the circle and it went to D'Angelo and her shot got past Griffin, but hit the post and was cleared by Hamilton.
To start the second quarter, Tufts continued their good play as they were awarded a penalty corner. D'Angelo passed it out to McCluskey, who had a slap shot that got stuck in Griffin's pads before the ball came out. It fell to the stick of a Tufts player, but her shot missed.
In the game, Tufts out-shot Hamilton 14-1 with 10 of the shots going on goal compared to one for Hamilton. With all the attacking done by the Jumbos, it led them to have big 12-1 advantage in corners. Hamilton goalie Griffin had a good day as she saved eight shots, helping keep the game scoreless for three quarters. Tufts goalie
Sam Gibby saved the only shot she faced.
Tufts is now 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. The Jumbos will have a non-conference game next as they face seventh-ranked Babson College at home on Tuesday at 6 PM. The loss drops Hamilton to 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. They will be at home tomorrow as they play Wesleyan at noon.
