Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Blanks Wellesley 3-0 in First Game

WELLESLEY - Sophomore Mia D'Angelo and junior Andrea DelGiudice scored their first collegiate goals on Wednesday night lifting the #4 Tufts Field Hockey team to a 3-0 win at Wellesley College. DelGiudice had two.

For most of the first half tonight, Wellesley junior goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis frustrated the Jumbos with strong play. She saved all eight shots she faced in the first quarter when Tufts had five corners. She then made two more saves in the second quarter before Tufts broke through.

After the Jumbos' eighth corner of the game was stopped by the Blue, the Tufts forwards twice quickly broke up Wellesley's attempts to clear. On the first Wellesley was able to stop the opportunity, but on the second the ball ended up on D'Angelo's stick. She fired it home with just 30 seconds remaining in the half for a 1-0 Tufts lead.

The Jumbos would finally convert on a corner attempt with 4:32 remaining in the third period. D'Angelo sent the ball to Reegan McCluskey at the top of the circle. She sent a short pass left to DelGiudice. Her first shot was blocked, but she back-handed the deflection into the cage and it was 2-0 Jumbos.

DelGiudice doubled her production about four minutes later, moving up from the midfield into the top of the circle where the ball fortuitously came to her stick. She sent a shot that found its way through the crowd and in with just 48 seconds to go in the third for a 3-0 score.

After a scoreless fourth, Tufts finished the game without allowing a shot attempt by the hosts. Senior goalie Sam Gibby did not need to make a save while recording the shutout. The Jumbos attempted 24 shots with 19 on goal. Corners finished 15-0 for Tufts.

Deehr-Lewis saved 14 of 17 shots sent her way, a strong .824 save percentage. The Blue's Lindsay Strong and Sara Maniscalco both had defensive saves.

The Jumbos open their home and NESCAC season at Ounjian Field on Saturday against Connecticut College at noon.
