Box Score MEDFORD – Junior
Ashley Zolin and senior
Jackie McCarthy connected on two early penalty corner opportunities, sending the Tufts field hockey team on its way to a 5-1 win against Connecticut College Saturday in the home and NESCAC opener at Ounjian Field.
McCarthy scored both goals, the first two of the defender's collegiate career. The first came just 1:10 into the game, with Zolin inputting and McCarthy's shot deflecting in of the right pad of Camels goalie Sophie Moniz. On the second, 3:11 into the second period, McCarthy scored high into the left side of the cage off Zolin's insert.
Despite the deficit, Conn - winless in NESCAC last year – was much improved. They forced Tufts senior goalie
Sam Gibby to make five saves in the opening half, including on a penalty stroke by Kylee Quinn early in the second period. The Camels had hit the post on a corner try right before that.
However, the Jumbos would build their lead to 4-0 at the half by scoring twice in the final five minutes of the second quarter. While falling down, Andrea DelGuidice directed a pass to
Mia D'Angelo in the middle of the circle for a 3-0 Tufts lead. Then with 33 seconds left in the half,
Kylie Rosenquest and
Rachel Scrivanich played a little give-and-go. Both forced a turnover deep in the Camel end, with Rosenquest taking possession and sending the ball to Scrivanich deep on the right side. She sent it back to Rosenquest inside the penalty stroke line where her goal gave the hosts a 4-0 advantage.
Tufts went up 5-0 with 3:48 left in the third as freshman
Meghan MacDonald scored her first collegiate goal with another assist to DelGiudice. Through two games DelGuidice has two goals and two assists for the Jumbos.
The Camels scored a well-deserved goal to break up the shutout late in the third. Off a corner, junior Hope Melanson sent a ball from the center of the circle that tricked by Gibby where sophomore Hannah Webster was there to knock it in.
After a scoreless fourth, Tufts finished the game with advantages of 21-15 in shots and 9-8 in corners. Gibby recorded seven saves and Moniz had six. Webster also had a defensive save for the Camels.
Tufts returns to action at MIT on Tuesday night.
