Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME (October 1, 2023) -- A memorable weekend for
Aarush Ganji and
Sacha Maes came to an end on Sunday morning in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional doubles final, as the pair earned a semifinal victory before falling in the regional final in play from Bowdoin College.
The Tufts pair started the weekend unseeded, but they knocked off three seeded doubles squads including moving into the finals with a strong 8-5 win over fifth-seed Myles Decoste and Charles Norman of Coast Guard.
In the finals, Maes and Ganji took on Middlebury's Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne of Middlebury College, another unseeded team. In the first set, the Middlebury pair earned an opening lead with a 6-4 victory but Maes and Ganji rallied back with a 7-5 win in the second set to send the match the distance. In the third and deciding match, Hentschel and Wijemanne took an early lead and rolled to the ITA doubles title with a 6-2 win in the third.
Despite the loss in the finals, Maes and Ganji earned five victories on the weekend. The Jumbos will head to Saratoga Springs, NY next weekend for the Skidmore College Invitational October 7-8 on Saturday-Sunday.
