Women’s Soccer Secure Much Needed Victory Against Non-Conference Opponents Endicott

MEDFORD, MA (October 5, 2023) – Women's soccer's leading scorer forward Elsi Aires, paired up with sophomore midfielder Aoife O'Reilly for scoring contributions to propel them to victory over non-conference opponents Endicott College from Bello Field, as the Jumbos secure a much-needed victory following draws against Husson University and Colby College.

Aires netted her sixth of the season today, following her own rebound into the back of the net midway through the first half. With it, Aires now sits second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in total goals scored at six. Amherst's Patience Kum currently leads in first place with eight goals. O'Reilly's contribution from today marks the first of her career.

The Jumbos outshot the Gulls by a whopping 12-six margin, only conceding one shot against freshman keeper Gigi Edwards in the second half. Once again Aires led the Jumbos in offensive efforts with four total shots on net. There were seldom opportunities to score from the corner today, as both teams produced a combined total of seven corners, four from the Jumbos, and three from the Gulls. Edwards earns her second shutout of her rookie season along with the Jumbos defense, as her record increases to 3-0-3 this year.

O'Reilly initiated scoring for the game today, as her goal came first in the 19th minute of the first half, following a long cross from the left wing in midfield. O'Reilly took a touch to settle the service and as the Gull's junior keeper Rosalina Caliri sprinted off the line to falter the play, O'Reilly slotted it into the bottom corner with a calm finesse to bring her team up 1-0.

The second and final goal of the game came from the Jumbo's leading goal scorer Aires, as senior midfielder Thalia Greenberg settled a long cross that was delivered just beyond center midfield. She settled the delivery with one touch and set up Aires with a layoff pass, which Aires rifled off with one touch. Her initial shot attempt was saved, however Aires was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound advancing Tufts lead to two on the afternoon for the final scoring tally of the contest.

Tufts University women's soccer improves to 5-2-3 on the season following today's win, as Endicott falls to 8-3-1. Jumbos will look to keep the ball rolling as they resume action against Bridgewater State University Bears on Tuesday from the Swenson Pitch in Bridgewater, MA.
