NORTHAMPTON, MA (October 6, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's tennis squad started action at the 2023 New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) Friday afternoon.
The bracketing and scoring was changed due to rain Friday, but Tufts had teams in both the A and B draws. The format is much different than most tournaments as two singles and one doubles match make up the final team scoring in a best-of-three format.
Tufts battled Amherst College in the "A" draw on Friday and were outlasted 2-1, as
Rachel Cranley and
Sophie Wax were able to earn the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Maddie Swire and Mia Kintiroglou. Steffy Julian played singles for the squad and was topped 8-5 by Swire, while Wax was upended 8-1 by Amherst's Kintiroglou.
The Tufts second duo of
Zoe Kava and
Rebecca Lim was also defeated, as Kava dropped her singles match 8-5 while Lim was bested 8-6. Tufts third group of
Natalie Hu and
Stephanie Woodbury dropped an 8-7 (5) nail biter in doubles, while Woodbury was topped 8-0 by Artemis Pados of MIT.
In the "B" draw, Tufts had Julian and
Nikki Kintiroglou sweep action over an Emerson College pair, as the duo earned an 8-1 win in doubles. Kintiroglou won her singles match 8-5, while Julian also was an 8-1 winner over Sammi Perry.
Day two of the three-day NEWITT affair will start Saturday at 9 a.m. at Smith College in Northampton, MA.
