SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 7, 2023) -- Junior
Derin Acaroglu moved into the semifinals of the top singles' draw Saturday at the 2023 Skidmore Invitational, highlighting play for the Jumbos on the day.
Acaroglu was the top seed in the main draw and started the day with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-2 win in the opening round over Brett Keeling of Wesleyan University. He then earned a straight-set win over Jacob Patterson of Denison University. He will take on Ethan Green of Denison Sunday at noon in the semifinals.
Alex Ganchev was bested 6-4, 6-1 by Neel Epstein of Middlebury College in the opening round of the "A" draw, while
Javier Gonzalez was topped by Kael Shah of Denison 6-2, 6-3. In the "B" draw, Ande Djokic won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 over Louis Bourn of Skidmore College before being topped in the second round 1-6, 6-4, 10-0 by Anthony Payliavlas of Denison.
First-year
Garv Bahl earned a win in the first round over Wesleyan's Ben Mitchell 6-2, 2-6, 10-5, but was bested 7-5, 6-7(2), 10-3 in the second round by Andy Mackler of Denison.
Lachie Macintosh dropped a hard-fought match fo Noah Lewis of Middlebury College, and Aarush Ganju fell to Zach Portnoy of Denison 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 in the "B" draw.
In the "C" draw,
Sacha Maes earned a straight set win over Max Lustgarte 6-3, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, Nickawn Namdar bested Maes 7-5, 6-4.
Mauricio Gutierrez dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Colin Gromley in the opening round as well.
In doubles, Ganchev and Djokic earned a bye in the "B" draw before rolling to an 8-3 win over Portnoy and Gonela of Denison to move into the semifinals Sunday. They will be joined in the semifinals by Gutierrez and
Javier Gonzalez after their 8-2 win over Frankel and Lee of Wesleyan.
Action will begin again on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY.
