MEDFORD, MA (November 18, 2023) -- The No. 12 Tufts University women's squash team opened its 2023-24 season with an emphatic win inside the Tufts Squash Center, pushing past William Smith College 8-1.
The Jumbos controlled most of the action on the day, with five of the eight victories Saturday coming in three games. At the top position, sophomore
Vharsha Dinesh battled to a 3-1 win with scores of 11-3, 11-7, 12-14 and 11-9. Junior
Riddhi Joshi had no issues in her first match of the season, rolling past Laila Selim at 11-6, 11-2 and 11-8.
Junior
Aleezah Burhan knocked off Jada Padmore-Smith in four games with a final score line of 12-10, 11-9, 9-11 and 11-6, while first-year
Maria Arsenieva defeated Diya Moolani for her first collegiate win with totals of 11-6, 11-9 and 11-7.
At No. 6,
Sanjana Vissapragada rebounded from a first-game loss to pick up an 8-11, 11-6, 11-2 and 11-3 win. Junior
Nieve Monderer dropped just 11 points over three games in rolling to an 11-2, 11-6 and 11-3 win over Lark Ervasti, and senior captain
Ellyn Xu defeated Jessica Finnerty 11-1, 11-9 and 11-4. The final point for Tufts was another first, as newcomer
Chloe Bergam won her first collegiate match with an 11-6, 11-0 and 11-2 scoreline.
The lone loss by the Jumbos came at No. 3, as
Caroline Chin was outlasted in five games by Nathalie Sim 12-14, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4 and 11-5.
Tufts will not have much time to revel in the victory, as the Jumbos have to turn right around and take on No. 2 Trinity College Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hartford, Conn. in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.
