Women's Squash Blanks Conn. College Friday Night

MEDFORD, MA (December 8, 2023) -- The No. 12 Tufts University women's squash team was able to show its depth on Friday night in the Tufts Squash Center, as four Jumbos recorded their first collegiate win in a 9-0 blanking of Connecticut College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. 

The Jumbos were able to control the action from start to finish on their home courts, moving to 3-2 on the season heading into a big battle with Amherst College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. inside the Tufts Squash Center. As for Friday, Tufts saw four players earn their first win in the blue and brown, as first-year Sora Karanja knocked off Miranda Medina 11-6, 11-3 and 11-4 at No. 6 for her first victory of the season. 

Sophomore Mafi Pinot was solid at No. 7 singles, as she chalked up her first win of the season after returning from injury to post a 11-3, 11-4 and 11-4 win over Gwyneth Perez. First-Year Sonya Bajaj topped Crystal Dixon 11-6, 11-1 and 11-2 at No. 8 for her first win, while dual sport athlete Bridget Schutt knocked off Lanie Lawrence in her first appearance for Tufts with scores of 11-5, 11-2 and 11-7 at No. 9. 

At the top of the ladder, Caroline Chin moved up to No. 1 for the match and topped Rachel Matamoros 11-3, 11-6, 11-3, and junior Aleezah Burhan settled in after a close first game to roll past Marian Anwar at No. 2 11-8, 11-1, 11-1. At the third position, Sanjana Vissapragada was able chalk up her third win of the season with a 11-7, 11-2 and 11-2 score at No. 3, and captain Ellyn Xu had no problems at No. 4 with a score of 11-2, 11-2 and 11-5.

Kate Chang also earned her first win of the 2023-24 season for the Jumbos, recording an 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 win over Ainsley Ellison at No. 5. The Jumbos were able to rest some of their players heading into Saturday's big match, as Vharsha Dinesh, Riddhi Joshi, Maria Arsenieva, Nieve Monderer and Chloe Bergam all got the night off. 

The Jumbos will look to earn their third straight win over Amherst College on Saturday in more NESCAC play.
