No. 4 Women's Lacrosse Knocks Off No. 17 Trinity In NESCAC Action

HARTFORD, CT (March 25, 2023) -- Sophomore attack Margie Carden posted a season-high five goals Saturday, leading the No. 4 ranked Tufts University women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 road victory over No. 17 Trinity College in action from Sheppard Field in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. 

Carden would end up as the leading scorer for the Jumbos (5-1, 3-0 NESCAC) Saturday, but it was Emma Joyce who was the catalyst early in the game for the Jumbos. Joyce put Tufts up just 13 seconds into the contest, taking the first draw down and firing home for the early lead. 

Trinity (5-2, 2-2 NESCAC) came right back with a pair of tallies, taking a 2-1 lead on a score from Lily Ives at 5:54 of the first quarter. Joyce netted another goal 90 seconds later to deadlock the game, scoring on a free-position attempt to make it 2-2 at the quarter break. Joyce was right back at it early in the second frame, scoring unassisted at 13:36 to put the Jumbos back on top at 3-2. 

Ives netted her second of the game to bring Trinity even, and the two teams exchanged goals over the next eight minutes before another Joyce goal with just under two minutes remaining in the first half game Tufts a 5-4 edge. The lead would get end up being two at the break for Tufts, as Caroline Conaghan was fouled going to cage, and deposited the resulting free position shot to up the Jumbos lead to 6-4. 

The Jumbos would get on the board first in the third quarter on another goal from Carden from the eight-meter fan, and Madeline Delaney set up Carden at 6:52 to play in the third quarter to put Tufts up 8-4. Caroline Lampert scored for the Bantams, sending the game into the final quarter with Tufts up three. 

Carden opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, opening a frame that saw the Jumbos outscore Trinity 5-2 in pulling away for the six-goal win. 

In addition to her team-high goal tally, Carden added a team-high eight shots on goal as she scored on two of he three free-position attempts. Joyce filled the stat sheet with four goals, six draw controls and a ground ball, while Delaney finished with a goal, assist and team-high seven draw controls. 

First-year Kate Deehan added three draw controls and a goal, while Lucy Hodge netted her first goal of the season. Tufts posted a marked 19-5 edge in draw controls for the game, though Trinity outshot the Jumbos 32-28 for the game. Senior Courtney Kaufman had a strong game, making 10 saves while allowing only seven goals against. 

Trinity was led by Ives and her four goals, and Molly McGuckin and Brooke Kurtz each finished with two assists as well for the Bantams. 

Tufts will have three days off before taking on Endicott College Tuesday, March 28 at 4 p.m. on Bello Field in home non-conference play in Medford, MA.
