Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME (April 7, 2023) -- Sophomore
Vuk Vuksanovic broke a 4-4 match with a clinching victory at No. 2 singles Friday night, as the No. 4 Tufts University men's tennis squad bested No. 12 Bowdoin College 5-4 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Pickard Tennis Courts.
The Jumbos continued their program best start, upping their record to 11-0 on the spring while moving to 6-0 in NESCAC action. Tufts has now won eight straight matches away from Medford, dating back to March 20.
Tufts led 2-1 after doubles play, as
Rishabh Sharda and
Josh Belandres earned a hard fought 8-6 win at the No. 2 position. At No. 3 doubles,
Jack Moldenhauer and
Alex Ganchev also topped their Polar Bear 8-5.
Bowdoin would even the match at a pair of wins apiece with a victory at No. 6 singles, but the Jumbos battled back for a victory at No. 4 as
Derin Acaroglu stayed perfect in singles this spring with a 6-4, 6-2 win to make the score 3-2 in favor of Tufts.
The Jumbos added another win at No. 3 singles, as Ganchev picked up his second win of the day to make the score 4-2 after earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Bowdoin would pick up victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to deadlock the match at four wins with only No. 2 still playing.
At the second position, Vuksanovic and Reid Staples battled back and forth as Staples picked up a set one victory 6-4. Vuksanovic broke Staples at 2-1, and rolled to a 6-3 win in the second set to force a third set. The players would be deadlocked at four games apiece in the third, but Vuksanovic earned a break to take the final set 6-4 to clinch the win for Tufts.
The Jumbos will be right back in NESCAC play Saturday afternoon, traveling to No. 20 Colby College for more conference action at 2 p.m. in a battle of NESCAC unbeaten squads.
