Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME (April 7, 2023) -- The No. 8 Tufts University women's tennis squad trailed after doubles play, but rallied with wins in five of six singles' matches to top No. 17 Bowdoin College 6-3 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play Friday afternoon.
The Jumbos (4-6, 4-2 NESCAC) would drop the first two spots in doubles, but
Lucy Mitchell and
Stephanie Woodbury pulled away at No. 3 doubles to earn an 8-5 win and make the score 2-1 in favor of the host Polar Bears.
That's the last time that the Jumbos would trail for the remainder of the match, as Tufts took five of the six singles' matches for the comeback win. Tufts deadlocked the match at two after a
Sophie Wax victory at the No. 1 position with scores of 6-1, 6-4.
Madeline Suk put the Jumbos on top with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles to make the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
Zoe Kava won her ninth straight singles' match to push the Jumbos to within one match of a clinch, as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. All but one of the wins in her streak has been in straight sets.
Bowdoin wouldn't go away, winning the next decision at No. 6, but the Jumbos put the match away as first-year
Rachel Cranley won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 for the clinching win. Mitchell would add her second win of the day with a victory in a super tiebreaker, taking the victory at No. 3 7-5, 6-7 (9), 1-0 (2).
Tufts will stay in Maine to battle Colby College Saturday afternoon in Waterville, ME at 11 a.m. in more NESCAC play.
