Box Score WATERVILLE, ME (April 8, 2023) -- The No. 4 Tufts University men's tennis team stayed unbeaten this spring season on Saturday on the road, knocking off No. 20 Colby College 8-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.
Colby and Tufts each came into the match on Saturday undefeated in the conference, but the Jumbos had no problems moving to 12-0 overall and 7-0 in the NESCAC. The Jumbos are now the only team remaining in the conference without a loss, as Middlebury College, Colby and Bowdoin College each sit with one loss after Saturday's action.
Tufts started the afternoon with a clean sweep in doubles' action, as
Vuk Vuksanovic and Derin Acaroglou got back in the win column with an 8-5 victory over Jake Cohen and Jan Wenger at the top spot.
Josh Belandres and
Rishabh Sharda moved to 8-2 this spring with another victory, knocking off James Bogdanovic and Sam Henry 8-6 at the No. 2 position. The final doubles match went to a tiebreaker, and
Alex Ganchev and
Jack Moldenhauer recorded their eighth win this spring with an 8-7 (5) win.
Tufts also controlled action in the singles' portion of the match Saturday, as Sharda topped Joey Barrett 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 to get to 6-5 on the season. Ganchev was a double winner as well for the Jumbos, as the first-year earned a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory at No. 2. Ganchev is now 8-1 on the season in dual matches.
Acaroglu stayed unbeaten in singles action this season, moving to 9-0 in 2023 with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Wenger at the No. 3 spot.
Javier Gonzalez was a straight set winner at No. 4 with scores of 6-2, 6-4, and
Andrej Djokic cruised at No. 6 singles for Tufts after winning 6-2, 6-1.
With the victory, nine of Tufts' 12 wins this spring have come over ITA ranked opponents, as Colby was No. 20 in the most recent rankings.
Tufts will get a little time off before returning home for the first time in over a month to host No. 16 North Carolina Wesleyan University Friday, April 14 at 3 p.m. on the South Courts.
