Women's Tennis Picks Up Second Win Of The Weekend With 7-2 Win Over Colby

Box Score WATERVILLE, ME (April 8, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's tennis team swept doubles action Saturday morning, cruising to a 7-2 win at Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play at the Indoor Competition Center inside Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center.

Zoe Kava and Sophie Wax opened the scoring for the Jumbos with a strong victory at No. 2 doubles, knocking off Isabella Suk and Madeline Omicioli 8-4, chalking up four break points in the match to give Tufts a 1-0. The lead for Tufts would double after another win at No. 1 doubles, as Maddie Suk and Rachel Cranley topped Samantha Riordan and Sydney Landau 8-3.

The final doubles to end was at No. 3, and Lucy Mitchell and Stephanie Woodbury earned their second win of the weekend as the pairing edged out Amelie Gal and Ellie Gershaw 8-7 (3). Mitchell and Woodbury are now 3-1 together on the season.

In singles play, Tufts needed just two individual victories to clinch its third straight NESCAC victory but that would have to wait as Colby got a win at No. 1 singles to make the score 3-1 after Wax was defeated by Riordan 6-2, 6-1. Rebecca Lim tallied a win at No. 5 singles over Suk 6-2, 6-2, and Kava would end up earning the match-clinching triumph at No. 3 as she topped Omicioli 7-6 (5), 6-3. Kava has now won 10 straight singles matches, and hasn't lost to a Division III opponent this spring.

Casey Cummings added a win at No. 6 for the Jumbos with a 6-2, 6-0 win, and Mitchell tallied her second win of the day at No. 2 after defeating Landau in a super tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (4). Mitchell has now won four straight in singles' action, with the last three coming in either three sets or in a breaker.

It was an important win for the Jumbos in the NESCAC standings, moving to within one win of clinching a NESCAC Tournament bid. Tufts is currently 5-6 overall, but 5-2 in conference play, sitting behind Amherst College (6-0), Middlebury College (5-0) and Wesleyan University (7-1).

The Jumbos will return home Tuesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. to take on local rival Brandeis University in non-conference action.
