ORLANDO, FL (May 20, 2023) -- The amazing run for Tufts University men's tennis player
Rishabh Sharda continued on Saturday afternoon in Orlando at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus, as Sharda rolled into the Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championships title match Sunday with a straight set win over Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins University.
Sharda picked up the win with scores of 6-2, 6-4 as he was dominant with his first serve in the match winning 84 percent of his first serves. Both Sharda and Yu were strong with the serve, as Sharda was not broken all match while fending off three break points, all three coming in the second set. On the other hand, Sharda was able to pick up three breaks of serve, converting two of three break points in the opening set.
Sharda started the match with a break in the opening game and held serve until picking up another break at 3-1 to take a three-game lead. Sharda posted another win of serve to make it 5-1 and closed it out with his next opportunity to take the first set 6-2.
In the second set, Sharda took a quick 2-0 thanks to an early break of Yu and Sharda was able to possess his serve, clinching the win with a deciding point at deuce at 5-4 to earn the victory.
Sharda will now take on a very familiar foe on Sunday morning at 10 a.m., battling Williams College's Matthew Kandel for the title on Team USA Court #1 for the individual crown. Kandel knocked off Vishwa Aduru of Case Western Reserve University 6-4, 7-6 (4) in his semifinal to complete the final.
