CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 16, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's tennis squad saw the strong pair of seniors
Zoe Kava and
Rebecca Lim advance to the main doubles final Sunday morning, highlighting action in the second of three days at the 2023 MIT Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Kava and Lim only needed to play one match on Saturday to get into Sunday's final, as they defeated Amy Cui and Maddie Swire of Amherst College 8-5 in a thrilling match played indoors. The duo will play Jay Lu and Kimberly Liao in the finals tomorrow, after the MIT pair walked through to the finals.
In singles play, Tufts had two players in the main draw heading into Saturday as first-year
Natalie Hu was topped by Julia Ross of Bowdoin College 6-3, 6-2. On the top half of the bracket, Kava started the day with a straight set win over Cara Hung of Bowdoin, 6-4, 6-0. In the semifinals, Kava had to play another three-set marathon but was bested this time by Ross 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
In consolation action,
Nikki Kintiroglou rallied from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to tie the match at a set apiece after a 6-4 win in the second. MIT's Liao would control the super-tiebreaker though, posting a 10-1 win in the breaker to earn the victory.
Stephanie Woodbury was slated to play Saturday, but was unable to compete due to injury in the singles consolation bracket.
In the consolation doubles' bracket, Hu and Woodbury were unable to compete due to the injury from Woodbury. Steffy Julian and Kintiroglou also played a spirited match in the semifinal round but fell to Katya Shepherd Johnson and Alicen Liu 8-6.
Lim and Kava will be the only Jumbos playing on Sunday, as the duo will play in the main draw doubles' final at 9 a.m. in the final day of action at the MIT Invitational.
