BRUNSWICK, ME (September 30, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's tennis pairing of
Sacha Maes and
Aarush Ganji moved into the semifinals of the doubles bracket in the second day of play from the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regionals at Bowdoin College.
The Jumbos had four doubles teams still in contention heading into Saturday's play, but only the unseeded duo of Maes and Ganji were able to survive to championship Sunday. Maes and Ganju started the day with an 8-3 win over Kailas Kahler and Daniel Papacica of MIT in the Round of 16, and followed that up with a quarterfinal victory over Neel Epstein and Noah Lewis of Middlebury, 8-5. The duo will take on fifth-seeded Myles Decoste and Charles Norman of Coast Guard Sunday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals.
Top-seeded
Derin Acaroglu and
Andrej Djokic fell 8-6 to Epstein and Lewis in the Round of 16, while
Alex Ganchev and Lachie MacIntosh were bested by Decoste and Norman 8-3 in the Round of 16 as well. On the bottom of the bracket,
Mauricio Gutierrez and
Javier Gonzalez took down third-seed Ethan Bradley and Reid Staples of Bowdoin College 8-3. In the quarterfinals, Gutierrez and Gonzalez were knocked off by Joe Mairs and Julian Wu of Middlebury 8-1.
In the championship singles' draw, Gonzalez fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to top-seeded Matt Kandel of Williams College. In the Round of 16, MacIntosh was also defeated by fourth-seed Jonah Wilson of Babson College 6-2, 6-4.
In the "B" singles draw,
Corey Marley was outlasted by Jose Gonzalez of Babson 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. Maes was a winner in the "B" draw Round against Pierce Garbett of Brandeis with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 10-6, but fell to Rex Harrison of Amherst College 7-4, 4-6, 10-8.
