MEDFORD, MA (January 11, 2024) -- The No. 12 Tufts University women's squash team got a win from first-year
Chloe Bergam at No. 9 but it wasn't enough as the Jumbos saw their four-match win streak come to an end against No. 5 Stanford University in an 8-1 loss inside Tufts Squash Center Thursday.
The Jumbos (6-3) played hard in all nine matches, and despite the 8-1 scoreline the hosts were in many of the contested contests. The one victory came at the No. 9 position, as Bergam won her fourth straight match with an exciting four-game win over Mary Duffy with scores of 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9. The first-year is now 5-1 on the season.
At No. 3, fellow newcomer
Maria Arsenieva hit some brilliant shots Thursday but fell to Marianna Dardon 11-4, 9-11, 11-3 and 11-4. At the No. 10 spot,
Sora Karanja took the third set over Isabella Rolfe, but eventually ended up falling 11-2, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8.
Sophomore
Vharsha Dinesh was right with Stanford No. 1 Madison Ho, but ended up dropping an 11-9, 11-5, 11-6 decision, while
Ellyn Xu battled hard at No. 8 before dropping an 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 decision to Leah McGillicuddy.
Stanford was also able to pick up straight game wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 in earning the victory. The Cardinals (2-2) will stay on the East Coast to battle No. 1 Harvard University Friday, No. 2 Trinity College Saturday and No. 9 Cornell University Sunday.
Tufts on the other hand will have a day off before hosting No. 23 Franklin and Marshall College Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. in the Tufts Squash Center.
