Hamilton Rallies to Tie Hockey 3-3 in NESCAC Play

CLINTON, NY (January 13, 2023) - Sophomore Philippe Lamarre and freshman Sylas Oberting both scored their first collegiate goals in the Tufts University hockey team's 3-3 tie at Hamilton College in NESCAC action today.

The Jumbos (8-4-2, 5-2-1 NESCAC) led 3-0 in the third period before the host Continentals stormed back to tie the score. Hamilton (9-4-1, 5-3-1) then out-shot Tufts 6-1 in the three-on-three overtime period, but the game ended in a draw.

The result ends Tufts' winning streak at eight games, which was the longest for the program since the 1994-95 season. The Jumbos do remain unbeaten (8-0-1) in their last nine games.

The first period saw plenty of action, but no goals as Tufts senior Peyton Durand stopped 16 shots and Hamilton sophomore Josh Nadler made 12 saves.

Despite another good start to the second period by Hamilton, it was the Jumbos who struck first. During sustained possession in the Hamilton end, junior Harrison Bazianos sent the puck from the right corner out to senior defenseman Cam Newton at the right point. He shot a pass to the top of the crease where junior Tyler Sedlak directed it home at 4:26 of the frame.

Not long after their goal, the Jumbos killed two Hamilton power plays including 1:34 of action when they were down two men. Durand made six saves during this time and would finish the second period with 19 overall.

The Jumbos then complemented their strong defense with a second goal at 15:30 of the second period. Sophomore Liam O'Hare got to the puck behind the net and kept possession despite having a defender right on him. He passed out to sophomore Cole Dubicki, whose shot was blocked. He got the deflection, curled around the left side of the ice and set up a one-timer high in the zone for Oberting who scored his first collegiate goal for a 2-0 lead.

The Jumbos then added to their lead just one minute into the third period. Junior Brennan Horn won a face-off in the Continental end, sending it back to Lamarre. His wrist shot through heavy traffic scored for a 3-0 Tufts margin, also his first collegiate goal.

The Continentals broke up the shutout with a power-play goal at 5:30 of the third. Junior Grisha Gotovets capitalized from the right circle and it was 3-1. Freshman Luke Tchor brought Hamilton within 3-2 by scoring from a tough angle on the left side at 11:26. The game-tying goal was scored by sophomore Max Bulawka at 18:28 after the Continentals had pulled their goalie and were playing with an extra man.

Durand finished the game with 45 saves, while his counterpart Nadler made 34 stops in the Hamilton net. Tchor (goal, assists) and James Philpott (two assists) of Hamilton were the game's multi-point scorers.

Both teams picked up 1.5 points for the tie. That keeps the Jumbos second in the conference with 17.5 points. Hamilton is fourth with 16.5 points.

The Jumbos will be on the road again next weekend for games at Trinity and Wesleyan.
