Hockey Earns 3-1 NESCAC Victory at Wesleyan University Saturday Afternoon

MIDDLETOWN, CT (January 20, 2024) - Junior Tyler Sedlak and sophomore Max Resnick both had a goal and an assist to lead the Tufts University hockey team to a 3-1 NESCAC win at Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

Tufts improves to 9-5-2 overall and 6-3-1 (20.5 pts) in NESCAC, ending a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) versus the Cardinals. The Jumbos are now 9-1-1 in their last 11 games overall this season. Wesleyan falls to 4-10-1 and 3-6-1 in the conference.

Resnick and Sedlak connected on Tufts' first goal 7:46 into the first period. Resnick won a face-off in the Cardinal end and sent it left over to Sedlak who one-timed a shot into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Then early in the second period the Jumbos were pressuring the Wesleyan goal. A shot by Sedlak was saved by Wesleyan senior goalie Erik Voloshin, but the puck went right back to Sedlak. He set up senior defenseman Sam Miller, whose shot was blocked. However, the deflected puck went into the right circle where Resnick picked it up with his backhand and switched to his forehand to score at 4:27 of the middle stanza.

Wesleyan cut the lead to 2-1 just 20 seconds into the third period. Soon after the face-off to start the period, freshman Connor Sutherland and junior Owen Sweet produced a two-on-one with Sweet passing over to Sutherland who scored from the slot.

However, an errant pass by Wesleyan in their own end went right to Jumbo junior Clark Bolin who skated in and snapped a shot past Voloshin to regain a two-goal lead for Tufts at 7:42 of the third period.

Tufts senior goalie Peyton Durand and the Jumbo defense would lock down the win from there. Wesleyan had a power play start at 16:13 of the third, then pulled Voloshin at 16:50 for a six-on-four advantage. However, Durand had 12 third-period saves to finish with 30 total and the Jumbos blocked six shots in the final five minutes of the game.

Voloshin finished with 33 saves for Wesleyan, including 14 in the second period.

The Jumbos will return home next weekend for NESCAC games against Williams College on Friday and Middlebury College on Saturday.
