Jumbo Women's Squash Sweeps Colby Tuesday

WATERVILLE, ME (January 9, 2024) -- The No. 12 Tufts University women's squash team opened the 2024 portion of its season Tuesday afternoon, besting host No. 25 Colby College 9-0 to win its third straight match in play from the Colby Squash Center. 

The Jumbos (5-2) picked up their first road victory of the season on Tuesday, dropping just three games over the nine matches in rolling past the Mules (1-2).

The longest match of the day came at the top spot between the two squad's No. 1 players, as Andrea Lee Jia Qi of Colby and Vharsha Dinesh of Tufts played a thriller. Qi earned the first game 11-5, but Dinesh rallied back with an 11-5 win of her own to tie the match. The two players continued to go back and forth, but Dinesh used her momentum from a game four win to outlast Qi 5-11, 11-5, 3-11, 11-6, 11-9 for her fourth win of the year. 

At the No. 2 position, Riddhi Joshi bested Aileen Dominguez as she rallied for a 5-11, 12-10, 11-7 and 11-8 victory. Joshi is now 4-2 on the season. The rest of the Jumbo squad would earn three-game victories, starting at No. 3 with an 11-7, 11-8 and 11-8 win by Maria Arsenieva over Abhisheka David. 

Caroline Chin topped India Spencer at No. 4 with scores of 11-5, 11-7 and 11-4, as she picked up her fourth victory of the year, and Aleezah Burhan rolled past Amanda Miller at No. 5 11-3, 11-6 and 11-6. Junior Nieve Monderer topped Karla Domingues 11-7, 11-3 and 11-4 at the No. 6 position, and Sanjana Vissapragada allowed just six points in a three-game sweep with scores of 11-2, 11-3 and 11-1. Vissapragada is now 5-2 on the season. 

At No. 8, captain Ellyn Xu cruised to an 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 win over MacKenzie O'Shea for her fifth victory of the season, and Chloe Bergam upped her mark to 4-1 this season with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 win at No. 9 over Pepper Claytor. First-year Sora Karanja also rolled in an exhibition win over Elizabeth Barroso 11-3, 11-0, 11-3. 

The Jumbos will look to win their fourth straight match Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Brunswick, Maine, taking on No. 18 Bowdoin College.
