NORTHAMPTON, MA (October 11, 2024) -- The Tufts University women's tennis team got its final fall tournament underway on Friday afternoon, as the Jumbos traveled to Smith College and Amherst College for the 2024 New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), faring well as five of the six Jumbo duos moved on in their respective draws.
In the "A" bracket, the top seeded Tufts squad of
Melanie Woodbury and
Rachel Cranley picked up a 2-1 win, as Cranley won her singles' match 6-4, 6-4 while the duo won in doubles 8-6 over Amherst College's Greta Stechschulte and Mia Kintiroglou. They will now take on the MIT duo of Fiona Lee and Anastasia Samets, which knocked off Tufts' pair
Sophie Wax and
Ryan Wuhrman, 3-0. Wax dropped her singles' match 6-2, 6-3, while Wuhrman dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 decision. In doubles, MIT's pair knocked off Wax and Wuhrman 8-4.
Also in the "A" draw,
Natalie Hu and
Stephanie Woodbury swept their match-up with Bates College, 3-0. Hu topped Iris Westmoreland 6-2, 6-3, Woodbury was a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Ava Steinberger while they teamed up for an 8-4 win in doubles. Woodbury and Hu will take on Amherst's top group of Lily Dounchis, Delila Friedman and Rachel Roth Saturday.
The Jumbos No. 4 grouping of
Athena Li and
Nikki Kintiroglou earned a walkover win to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In the "B" draw,
Ellie Gershaw and
Brooklyn Bindas cruised in their match against Gordon's Serena Ross and Anette Kim, 3-0. Gershaw was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Ross, Bindas topped Kim 6-0, 6-1 and the duo won in doubles 8-0. Also in the "B" draw,
Nadia Khera and Evalina Anastasia also swept their three matches for a 3-0 win over Smith College's Clara Goshgarian and Lili Goshgarian. Kera was a 6-3, 6-2 winner, Anastasia posted a 6-1, 7-5 victor with the doubles' match going 8-7 (3) for the Jumbos.
Khera and Anastasia will take on Wheaton College's Kara Greenlee and Alissa Ortiz in the quarterfinals, while Gershaw and Bindas will battle Bates College's Drew Williams and Elizabeth Frekko.
