NORTHAMPTON, MA (October 13, 2024) -- First-year
Brooklyn Bindas and junior transfer
Ellie Gershaw teamed up to win the "B" draw this weekend at the 2024 New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, hosted by Smith College.
The Jumbo pair knocked off Bates College's Drew Williams and Elizabeth Frekko 3-0 in the quarterfinals, and then topped Williams pairing of Julia Zhang 2-1. In that match, Gershaw and Bindas fell 8-7 (4) in doubles but Gershaw would earn a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 11-9 win in singles while Bindas cruised to a 6-2, 7-6 (0) win to advance to the finals. In the finals, Gershaw and Bindas swept the three matches against Megan Sun and Selma Petrie of MIT with an 8-4 win in doubles. In singles, Gershaw won her match 7-6 (5), 6-3 while Bindas posted a 6-3, 6-2.
In Saturday's action, Tufts fell in all four of its match-ups in the "A" bracket.
Athena Li and
Nikki Kintiroglou were bested 3-0 by MIT's pair of Chloe Zeng and Jay Lu, while
Melanie Woodbury and
Rachel Cranley were topped 2-1 by MIT's pair of Fiona Lee and Anastasia Samets.
Natalie Hu and
Stephanie Woodbury also battled by fell to Amherst's Lily Dounchis 2-1.
Tufts finishes up the fall season, but will return in March for the remainder of its 2024-25 campaign.
