CAMBRIDGE, MA (October 20, 2024) - The Tufts University Women's Rowing first varsity won its second straight Collegiate Eights title at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday.
The Jumbos powered to a 17:02.698 time over the three-mile course on the Charles River to capture the Yaz Farooq Trophy as the women's Collegiate Eights champions. Tufts' second varsity also had a strong performance today, earning ninth place out of the 34 total teams with a 17:45.643 mark. They were the top second boat to finish.
Primarily challenged by Wesleyan University among 34 total teams in the event, the Jumbo 1V8's time trailed the Cardinals by four seconds at the first two checkpoints. However, Tufts showed its endurance during the second by building a three-second lead at the third checkpoint, and then won the race by eight seconds. Tufts' fellow NESCAC rival Williams College was third today behind the Jumbos and Wesleyan with a 17:14.585 time. Vanderbilt University placed fourth (17:19.978) and Bates College was fifth (17:33.270).
The Tufts-Wesleyan finish today was the exact same as last June when Coach
Lily Siddall's Jumbos won their first-ever NCAA Championship. Wesleyan was the NCAA runner-up to Tufts in both the overall scoring and in the first varsity race at NCAA's.
In slower conditions for racing last year, Tufts won its first Head of the Charles Collegiate Eights with an 18:03.969 mark. That was three seconds in front of the University of Calgary (18:06.408).
