MEDFORD, MA (November 15, 2024) -- The Tufts University women's squash squad got its 2024-25 season started right on Friday afternoon, knocking off No. 12 Georgetown University 6-3 inside Tufts Squash Center in a spirited, action-packed affair.
The Jumbos (1-0) picked up key wins in the early wave, as senior
Riddhi Joshi outlasted Cecilia Curran 3-2 at the No. 4 spot with scores of 7-11, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7 and 11-6. First-year
Indira Moshi would add to the win total for the Jumbos, earning her first collegiate win with a five-game thriller at No. 8 with scores of 8-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5 and 11-3.
In the second wave of action on the three courts,
Sonya Bajaj also was a five-game match winner as she battled back from two games down to earn a thrilling 6-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 win at No. 9. The fourth win of the day for the Jumbos came at No. 1, as
Vharsha Dinesh posted a five-game win over Sanah Syed at 15-13, 10-12, 11-9, 11-13 and 11-6.
The clinching point for the Jumbos came at No. 7, as senior
Nieve Monderer needed only 26 minutes to push past Aarohi Kuthari in three games with scores of 15-13, 11-7 and 11-9. Classmate
Aleezah Burhan also was a winner at No. 6, besting Lindsay Lee 11-5, 12-10 and 13-11.
First-year
Sohni Vermani dropped her first collegiate match 3-1 to Rachel Mashek 11-3, 13-11, 11-13 and 11-5, while sophomore
Maria Arsenieva fell 11-7, 11-13, 12-10 and 14-12 at No. 3. First-year
Anika Goyal also fell in five games at No. 5, just showing the competitiveness of the match.
Tufts will regather for another big match, as No. 2 Trinity College comes to the Tufts Squash Center Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for play in Medford.
