NEW YORK (November 22, 2024) -- The No. 13 Tufts University women's squash team chalked up a pair of five-game wins near the top of the lineup, but the host No. 9 Columbia University was strong throughout the lineup to pick up a 7-2 decision Friday evening.
Tufts' wins came at the No. 2 and the No. 3 spots, as first-year
Sohni Vermani outlasted Amal Izhar in five games 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, 6-11, 12-10 in an epic thriller at No. 2. In the No. 3 spot,
Maria Arsenieva shook off a 2-0 match deficit to rally for the reverse sweep with a 7-11, 15-17, 11-1, 11-7, 12-10 win.
First-year
Anika Goyal led her No. 5 singles match 2-1 through three games, but couldn't hold on as Andreea Ghiorghisor earned a 7-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6 and 11-9. Sophia Hu of Columbia also earned a 3-1 win at No. 6 singles over Aleezah Burham 11-9, 11-8, 6-11 and 12-10, while Tufts' Vharsha DInesh was barely defeated at No. 1, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3 and 11-8.
At No. 4, Nourin Khalifa topped
Riddhi Joshi 11-9, 11-9 and 11-8, while senior
Nieve Monderer was tripped by by Eugenia Li at No. 7, 11-9, 13-11 and 11-1. First-year
Indira Moshi fell 3-0 to Advita Sharma 11-7, 11-1 and 11-8 at the No. 8 spot, and Chloe Berham dropped an 11-8, 11-7 and 11-5 decision to Renee Chan at No. 9.
Tufts (1-3) will have a day off before traveling to Philadelphia to take on Drexel University Sunday at Arlen Spector Squash Center at 1:00 p.m.
