Bowdoin Comes From Behind for 4-3 NESCAC Hockey Win Over Jumbos

BRUNSWICK, ME (December 7, 2024) - Bowdoin College scored three times in the third period to come back for a 4-3 NESCAC victory against visiting Tufts University in men's hockey action Saturday afternoon at Watson Arena.

Tufts led 3-1 through two periods after scoring twice within a 1:14 stretch late in the middle stanza. However, the hosts roared back in the third and took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Matt Roy at 11:45 of the period. The Jumbos pulled the goalie and put great pressure on Bowdoin for the last 1:45, but freshman Jacob Osborne made five saves during this time to close out the victory for the Polar Bears.

The Jumbos dropped both Maine games on their final weekend of the first semester and sit at 4-4-1 overall and 2-4 in NESCAC. Bowdoin swept its weekend in conference play and is now 5-3 and 3-2 in the league.

Tufts got out in front five minutes into the game. During heavy pressure in the Bowdoin zone, Tufts' Rory Andriole got the puck in the right circle. He fired a pass through the slot to Jameson Klein in the left circle who blasted a one-timer in for a 1-0 Jumbo lead.

Tufts took that margin to the second period, but Bowdoin tied the game at 3:32 off a strong backcheck by Michael Dinges. That led to a break with Jack Barbro sneaking through the Jumbo defense into the Tufts end and Dinges finding him open down the middle for the goal.

Tufts swung the momentum in their favor with goals at 15:57 and 17:11 of the second period. On a power play for the first goal, Cole Dubicki whirled from his own end into the Polar Bear zone. He dished left to Harrison Bazianos who sent the puck across to Liam O'Hare for a shot near the right dot and a power play goal. On the third Tufts goal, Sylas Oberting forced a turnover just outside the Bowdoin end and the puck ended up with John Mulvihill. He went in two-on-one with Marcus Sang with Mulvihill passing left to Sang for a 3-1 Jumbo lead.

The Polar Bears began their comeback with a power play goal by Gabe Shipper 2:22 into the third. He was set up by Isaac Abbott who passed the rebound of his own one-timer to Shipper. Luke Wheeler tied the game for Bowdoin at 7:04 by capitalizing during a scrum in front of the Tufts net after Abbott sent a shot on goal.

On the eventual game-winner, Dinges won a face off back to Will Killoran at the left point. He sent it to the right to Roy whose blast put the Polar Bears up 4-3.

The Jumbos had possession for almost all of the 1:45 of action after they pulled goalie Tade Carman, but Osborne made five of his 30 total saves to complete the come-from-behind win.

Shots were 35-33 Bowdoin, with Carman finishing at 31 saves in the Jumbo net. Bazianos assisted on two goals for the Jumbos. Barbro had a goal and assist and Dinges two assists for the Polar Bears.

The Jumbos are off until playing in the Tampa Bay Classic early in the new year.
