TAMPA, FL (January 3, 2024) - Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) junior Jacob Bosse scored the game-winner on a power-play goal with five minutes left in regulation to lead the Raiders to a 4-2 victory over Tufts University in the first round of the Tampa College Hockey Invitational tonight at AdventHealth Center Ice.
The Jumbos (4-5-1) will play in the tournament consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 PM against Albertus Magnus College, who lost 1-0 to Suffolk University in today's other first-round game. MSOE (4-7-1), who added a late empty-net goal against Tufts, will play Suffolk in the tournament final on Saturday at 7:30 PM.
Tufts had overcome deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to tie tonight's game at 2-2 heading into the third period. However, on the MSOE power play goal, the Jumbos were desperate for a change and Bosse took advantage of it darting into the zone and lifting a shot past Tufts goalie
Tade Carman for the go-ahead goal with 5:25 on the clock.
After the Raiders had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Gramm McCormack, the Jumbos would battle back for a 2-2 tie at the end of the second period following goals by linemates
Clark Bolin and
Marcus Sang.
Bolin, in his first appearance of the season, scored at 8:50 of the second to tie the game at 1-1. During Tufts' possession in the Raider end,
Liam O'Hare collected the puck along the right boards and fed Bolin in the slot for the goal.
However, MSOE came back less than a minute later to regain the lead. The Jumbos lost control of the puck in their own end and Ethan Mann picked it up in the left circle. He went in on Carman, drew the puck out wide and scored at 9:43 to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage.
Sang's goal came short-handed to tie the score at 2-2. He picked off an errant Raider pass near center ice and pushed the puck up into the zone. He then beat MSOE goalie Austin Schwab who came out to make a play on the puck and fired it into an open net with 1:38 left in the second.
After Bosse's goal put MSOE ahead late in the third, the Raiders did a nice job defensively to hold off the Jumbos including most of the final minute and a half when Tufts pulled Carman for an extra skater. Eddie Shepler added the empty-net goal for MSOE.
The Jumbos finished with a 29-23 advantage in shots, led by their 16-7 margin in the first period. Carman had 19 saves in the Tufts net, while Schwab stopped 27 shots for the Raiders.
