MALDEN, MA (February 10, 2024) – Freshman Devon de Vries scored 1:15 into the overtime period to lift visiting Hamilton College to a 3-2 victory at Tufts University in NESCAC action Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum.
Tufts had tied the game at 2-2 with a minute left in regulation on a goal by senior captain
Sam Miller. The Jumbos were playing 6-on-4 with senior goalie
Peyton Durand off the ice for an extra skater and Hamilton down a man due to a penalty.
The Jumbos were able to stay close despite Hamilton controlling the first two periods today. With the point for the overtime loss, the Jumbos remain third in NESCAC with 29.5 points. They are 8-7-1 in the league and 11-9-2 overall.
Hamilton, led today by two goals from sophomore Jackson Krock, remain in fourth place in the league with 27.5 points (9-6-1) and improve to 14-7-1 overall.
Tufts scored first when junior
Tyler Sedlak (two assists) from along the left boards in Hamilton's end zipped a pass across the zone to charging sophomore
Max Resnick who snapped it in at 3:34 of the opening period.
Krock's first goal tied the game at 1-1 at 11:15 of the first period. De Vries dropped a pass to freshman Luke Tchor (two assists) in the right face-off circle and his shot was tipped in by Krock.
A face-off win by Krock on the left side of the Jumbo zone during a power play would result in his second goal. He sent it back to junior James Philpott at the left point and then Krock deflected Philpott's shot past Durand at 14:47 of the second period.
Hamilton had a 41-17 advantage in shots through two periods, with Durand making 39 saves to keep the game close. Tufts then came to life in the third period, eventually tying the score.
Up two men with time nearing a minute left in regulation, the Jumbos patiently set up a shot. Dubicki from the left circle fed Miller for a one-timer in the high slot and he scored tying the game at 2-2.
In the overtime, de Vries earned the puck at his own blue line and sent it over to Tchor. With Tchor moving into the Tufts zone, de Vries hustled to set up a two-on-one and then scored off the pass from Tchor to end it.
Hamilton finished with a 52-31 advantage in shots for the game. Both teams were 1 for 3 on power plays. Durand stopped 49 shots for Tufts and senior Jack Grant, who was solid in the third, made 29 saves for the Continentals.
Tufts honored 10 seniors with a pre-game ceremony this afternoon.
Next weekend is the last of the NESCAC regular-season with Tufts traveling for games at Bowdoin and Colby, and Hamilton hosting Middlebury and Williams.
