MEDFORD, MA (May 3, 2024) – The Tufts University men's and women's rowing teams will have 10 boats in action at the 2024 New England Rowing Championships (NERC) on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester tomorrow.
Tufts was first in the 2023 NERC Combined Team Point Standings last May. The Jumbos placed third in both the men's and women's Point Trophy Standings. The NERC features teams from across all three divisions in the region. Holy Cross is the defending men's point champion, while Bates College took the Women's Point Trophy.
The Tufts women's team, ranked #1 in Division III in the Pocock CRCA Poll for May 1, will be one of 20 teams in the first varsity competition. Tufts is in the second heat at 10:40 AM with #4 Wesleyan University, #9 WPI, #11 Coast Guard, Bowdoin, Connecticut College and Assumption. The Jumbos will be looking to advance to the grand final, which is the day's last race starting at 5:10 PM.
The Jumbo men's varsity eight, ranked third nationally in the IRCA/IRA Men's D3 Varsity 8+ Poll this week, is part of a 14-team contest. The Jumbos will face #4 Williams, #9 WPI and Middlebury in the third heat at 10:30 AM. The grand final, which Tufts aims to be in, will start at 4:30 PM.
Tufts' second varsity teams have heats at 9:20 AM (men) and 10 AM (women). The men will go against Wesleyan, MIT, WPI, Middlebury and Boston College. Holy Cross, Wellesley, WPI, Connecticut College and Vermont will be the women's opponent. The grand finals, for which the Jumbos will need to qualify, are at 3:30 PM for the men and 4:00 PM for the women.
The women's third varsity, which won the New England championship a year ago, rows in the first heat tomorrow at 8:40 AM against Wellesley, Wesleyan, Middlebury and Connecticut College. The 14-team event will have three finals, with the grand final scheduled for 3:10 PM. The Tufts men's 3V8 rows in the first heat at 8:20 AM against Trinity, Bates, Middlebury and UMass. Nine total teams will vie for spots in the grand final (2:40 PM).
The deep Tufts teams will both have two boats in the fourth varsity competitions. The Jumbo men's and women's 4V8s and 5V8s will row in straight finals here, with the six-team men's race starting at 2:10 PM and the seven-team women's event beginning at 2:20 PM. The Jumbos were first in both fourth varsity finals in 2023.
