Tufts Wins Battle of Top 15 Teams at MIT 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 18, 2024) - Goals by sophomore Claire Casey and senior Kylie Rosenquest led the #7 nationally-ranked Tufts University field hockey team to a 2-0 win at #13 MIT tonight.

In the non-conference game between national top-15 teams, the Jumbos finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots including 11-3 on goal. Tufts has now won three in a row and stands at 4-1 overall. MIT fell to 3-2.

Tufts started right away with offensive pressure in the first quarter, earning three corners and taking six shots. However, MIT sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer made four saves and the game was scoreless after 15 minutes.

The Jumbos' totals were 10 shots, including six on goal, and seven penalty corners before they were able to score the game's first goal late in the second quarter. On a corner, senior tri-captain Kayleigh McDonald inserted to Casey at the top of the left curve of the circle. She took a touch and then blasted home the first goal of her career. McDonald now has three assists in her last two games for the Jumbos.

Tufts' advantage in play continued with nine more shots and five more corners in the second half. They would add to the lead on a penalty stroke with seven minutes remaining in regulation. During heavy Tufts pressure in front of the net following a shot by junior Hannah Biccard the Jumbos were awarded th stroke and Rosenquest delivered.

MIT did earn seven corners in the game. Early in the fourth quarter when it was still a 1-0 game, Engineer junior Bailey McIntyre got a shot off on a corner that was saved by Tufts junior Lydia Eastburn. Otherwise, Tufts did not allow a shot on goal during the other six corners including four with no shot allowed.

Eastburn made three saves overall to notch her second shutout of the season and sixth in her career. Zimmer finished with nine saves in the MIT cage.

The Jumbos return to NESCAC action at Hamilton College on Saturday.
