MEDFORD, MA (October 3, 2025) -- The Tufts University men's tennis team played host to the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Friday, as day one of the three-day event showed promise for the Jumbos.
In singles, sophomore
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis picked up a pair of victories to move into the Round of 16 on Saturday, as he defeated Zsombor Homonnay of Colby Sawyer 6-0, 6-2. He then followed that up with a come-from-behind win over Lukas Frangenberg, posting a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 win over his foe from Amherst College. He will take on Andrew Mendelson of Bowdoin College Saturday.
He wasn't the only Jumbo player to earn a spot in the Round of 16, as senior
Andrej Djokic recorded a thrilling 6-7 (0), 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Cameron Zia in the Round of 32. The match was the final match of the evening, as Djokic outlasted his opponent from Bowdoin College. Djokic also posted a 6-1, 6-1 win of Jaime Galligo Subirana of Wheaton College. He will take on Alex Merson of Babson College Saturday in the Round of 16.
Junior
Garv Bahl cruised into the Round of 16 as well with a pair of straight set wins, as he posted a 6-0, 6-3 win in the opening round before besting Cal Wider of Amherst in the Round of 32 6-3, 6-3. He will take on Julian Wu of Middlebury on Saturday, the tournament's fourth-seeded player.
Seniors
Sacha Maes and
Alex Ganchev won their first matches, but were both knocked off in the second round to end their tournament. Sophomore Eren Chueng also won his opening round match over Siddarth Marathe of MIT, but Chueng would fall to the No. 2 seed of the tournament Andreas Sillaste of Amherst 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, top-seed Maes and Ganchev moved into Saturday's Round of 16 with an 8-3 win over Oliver Lorenz and Aidan Wang-Fan of Brandeis. They will take on on Reif Larsen and Nathan Hernandez of Middlebury at 9 a.m. Saturday. Sophomore
Nico Tremblay and first-year
Anirudh Dhanwada posted a pair of wins, including an 8-3 win to move into the Round of 16 against Jason Daly and Marco Ziets-Segura from Colby, the No. 4 seed.
No. 3 seed
Javier Gonzalez and sophomore
Kaetan Mehta posted an 8-7 (2) win in the Round of 32 to move into Saturday's action, while Mastrogamvrakis and first-year
Jackson Rich recorded two wins highlighted by an 8-3 win over MIT's Adam Sun and Grant Gallagher, the No. 7 overall seed.
In the "B" singles's draw, Rich was a winner over over Max Golubenko of Trinity 8-2 after a first-round bye, while classmate
Matej Djokic chalked up two wins to move into Saturday's Round of 16. Tremblay was slated as the tournament's No. 2 seed, and rolled to an 8-2 win over Diego Sosa of Colby to stay in the draw.
Action will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. on Voute Courts at the Tufts Tennis Center.
