Chicago Pulls Away Late To Top Jumbo Women's Basketball, 66-57

CHICAGO (November 16, 2025) -- The Tufts University women's basketball team was deadlocked at 57 with host University of Chicago with five minutes to play, but the offense would go cold as the Maroons pulled away for a 66-57 win in the Midway Classic finale inside Ratner Athletics Center.

The game featured 11 lead changes and eight tied scores, as the contest was back-and-forth the entire contest. In the first quarter, Tufts scored seven of the first nine points of the game capped by a bucket from first-year Tessa Lozner to put the Jumbos up 7-2 with 4:41 left in the frame.

Tufts was up 9-4 with four minutes to play in the opening quarter, but the hosts tallied the final 11 points of the first period to take a 15-9 edge into the second. Chicago would lead until the Jumbos regained the lead at 25-24 with 3:48 left in the half on a triple from Lozner. A late three-pointer by junior Annie Ryan gave Tufts the 31-28 lead at the halftime stoppage.

The Maroons came back and took a six-point advantage four minutes into the second half, but the Jumbos pushed back to regain the lead on a three-pointer by Annie Aspesi at 46-44 just before the end of the third.

Both teams would score efficiently in the fourth quarter until five minutes left after a Sarah Crossett bucket tied the game at 57. From that point, Chicago netted the final nine points of the game to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Aspesi had a career-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, nailing four of her eight three-pointers on the day. Aspesi added two assists and four rebounds. Crossett had 12 points and five rebounds, while first-years Lozner and Abby Congdon recorded eight points apiece.

Ryan also had has eight points off the bench as Tufts shot the ball well from three-point land, going 9-of-19 from deep (47.4 percent). The Jumbos also were 50 percent overall offensively in a game that saw more makes than misses. Turnovers were an issue though for the Jumbos, as 18 giveaways turned into 22 points for the Maroons.

Chris Sanders finished with 18 points for the Maroons, while Caroline Workman and Bri Simpson each had 10 points in the win.

Tufts will now set its sights on Babson College, as the Jumbos will battle the Beavers on the road in Babson Park, MA Tuesday, November 18 at 7 p.m.
