WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (November 22, 2025) – Brady Welsch scored two goals including a power play strike early in the overtime period to lead host Williams College to a 4-3 NESCAC men's hockey victory over Tufts University on Saturday afternoon at Lansing Chapman Rink.
Tufts had tied the score at 3-3 late in the third period and then both Tufts goalie Gus Bylin and Williams' Kael DePape made excellent saves in the closing minutes to send the game into overtime.
The Jumbos were whistled for a too many men on the ice infraction just 15 seconds into OT. After Eph Jake McManus won a faceoff in the Tufts end, Connor Berg set up Welsch for a one-timer from low in the left circle that won it for Williams.
The Tufts tying goal started with
Jameson Klein keeping the puck in at the right point.
Ethan Ullrick took it from along the right half-boards and fired a pass through the slot to defenseman
Sylas Oberting who was charging the net down the left side and scored to make it 3-3 with 2:46 remaining in the third period.
After the game had entered the third tied at 2-2, Welch's first goal gave the Ephs a 3-2 lead with six minutes remaining in regulation. McManus retrieved the rebound of a DePape save and sent a cross-ice pass over to David Vieten. He skated into the Jumbo zone, crossed into the high slot and left the puck for Welsch who snapped it home for a 3-2 Eph advantage.
A back-and-forth contest all night included the Jumbos tying the game at 2-2 late in the middle stanza. Tufts caught Williams in a change as Oberting chased down the puck at center ice. He sent it to
Brendan Fennell entering the zone, who passed back-and-forth with
Trace Norwell. Fennell then set-up
Bryceon Lago with a clean look and he delivered with 1:26 left in the period.
Williams would score three power-play goals on six attempts in the game – compared to Tufts' 0 for 2 man-advantage numbers. Two of the Ephs' extra-man goals came four minutes apart early in the second period. McManus scored at 1:57, taking the puck behind the net on the left side and coming out to the right circle and scoring to make it a 1-1 game. Then Gates Omicioli cleaned up a rebound of a blocked shot at 5:46 of the period to put the Ephs up 2-1.
Tufts had taken a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period. From behind the Jumbo goal line, Ullrick poked the puck up the left boards where
Jonathan Horn won it. He sent it up to
Cole Dubicki, who broke into the Williams zone and flipped it back to Horn who was open at the left dot. He picked the far right side cleanly for the opening goal at 7:53 of the first period.
Tufts takes two close losses on the second weekend of the season, including 1-0 at Middlebury last night, leaving the Jumbos at 2-2 overall. Williams won twice this weekend to improve to 2-2.
The Ephs had a 37-31 advantage in shots on goal. DePape made 28 saves for the victory while Bylin stopped 33 shots for Tufts.
Jackson Krill assisted three goals for Williams. Ullrick had a pair of assists for the Jumbos.
