Women's Track and Field Places Third at DIII New England Championships

BOSTON, MA (March 1, 2025) - The Tufts University women's indoor track and field finished in third at the Division III New England Championships at The TRACK at New Balance in a day full of competition on Saturday. The Jumbos totalled 88 points to finish behind second place M.I.T. and first place Williams.

The Jumbos kicked off the morning in a big way, taking the top two spots in the triple jump thanks to the efforts of senior Jordan Andrew and first year Elysse Cumberland. Andrew took first place with a new personal best in the event, a massive leap of 11.97m. Cumberland also set a new personal record, taking second place with a mark of 11.81m.

Lexi King kept the momentum going by matching her personal best in the high jump. The sophomore took flight into fourth place as she cleared the bar at 1.66m, tying her career high set at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational in January. Graduate student Harper Meek also landed in the points, jumping to a 1.63m mark for seventh place.

On the track, the Jumbos kept their strong performance rolling. First year Makayla Moriarty ran a blistering 400m dash, setting a new personal best in 57.47 seconds. Her career-high to this point landed her in sixth place to pick up even more points for Tufts.

The Tufts relay team went right to work to finish up the day. The squad of first year Avery Kerr, first year Logan Elie, senior Carly Rinko and sophomore Kaya West took third place in the 4x800m relay, finishing the grueling event in just 9:27.91. It was the fastest time any permutation of Jumbos had completed the event this season. The Jumbos concluded the competition with a solid performance in the 4x400m relay. Senior Annika Kral, first year Makayla Moriarty, senior Emma Smith and first year Arielle Chechile combined for a fourth place finish in just 3:52.95. It was a great way to end the meet, as it was the second fastest time in the event in Tufts program history, missing out on the record by just 0.13 seconds.

The Jumbos broke the school record in the 4x200m relay yesterday, as the squad of Kral, Moriarty, Cumberland and Lawal took third with a 1:42.45, an improvement of the previous Jumbo record by over two seconds.

Tufts finished the day in third place, a great finish to put the Jumbos in an equally great position going into the NEICAAA Championships next weekend at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center. Competition begins on Friday at 1:00 pm.
