Women's Rowing Wins Six of Eight Against Bates and Wellesley in Malden

MALDEN, MA (April 12, 2025) - The Tufts University women's rowing team won six out of eight races against Bates College and Wellesley College in action at Malden River on Saturday.

Wintry conditions on Saturday morning forced a change to the racing schedule format. The Jumbos were originally slated to go against Wesleyan University as well, but the Cardinals did not make the trip.

Today's racing saw three of the top 10 teams in the CRCA Division III rankings with #1 Tufts, #5 Bates and #8 Wellesley College. Tufts was 2-0 in both third and fourth varsity action, and split the two competitions in first and second varsity.

The Jumbo 3V8 extended its two-year winning streak with a 7:36.9 to 8:02.9 victory over Wellesley, then a 7:40.0 to 7:48.3 win against Bates. Tufts' team was coxswain Alex Boyer with Georgia Butler, Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso, Sophia Brackett, Alex Timoney, Sheelyn Pharr, Katherine Tombaugh, Brooke Thompson and Molly Heeney.

In fourth varsity racing, the Jumbos won by a 7:48.1 to 8:32.8 margin over Wellesley and were 15 seconds faster than Bates (7:57.5 to 8:12.2). Coxswain Elizabeth Chin guided Ashley Brzezenski, Sanjana Rao, Hannah Schiller, Lyra Bornholdt-Collins, Eva Swei, Aubyn Mackey, Alice Wall and Cecelia Wilson.

After defeating Wellesley with a 7:11.7 mark to 7:28.6, the Tufts first varsity was later edged by Bates 7:17.9 to 7:214. The Jumbos' lineup had coxswain Hannah Jiang with Rose Tinkjian, Janna Moore, Josie Monroe, Emma Lyle, Lucy Howell, Reilly Uiterwyk, Stella Shen and Sami Haynes.

The Tufts second varsity had a 7:30.2 time to defeat Wellesley's 7:44.0 before Bates later topped the Jumbos by crossing the line in 7:31.7 to Tufts' 7:41.2 mark. The Jumbo boat was coxswain Maddie Rosato with Lecia Sun, Sydney Barr, Alicia Coble, Julia Zipoli, Ava Elliot, Nazira Collins, Natalie Graham and Sophie Cumming.

The Bates first and second eights had not raced earlier in the day like Tufts had done.

A Tufts fifth varsity eight of coxswain Rose Lavin with Fiona Smirl, Claire Carson, Nora Redding, Elise Justman, Ella Tuck, Jackie Kloner, Sabina Murray and Maddy Wood rowed a time trial with no opponent and recorded an 8:03.05 mark.

Tufts also celebrated Senior Day today on the final home date of the spring season at Shoemaker Boathouse.

The Jumbos will be on Lake Quinsigamond for the first time this spring next Sunday (Apr. 20) for the annual first varsity Brown Cup race and more against WPI.
