Baseball Dropped by Wheaton on the Road

DALTON, MA (April 23, 2025) - The Tufts University baseball team was downed by the Wheaton College Lions 17-9 in a midweek non conference matchup down in Dalton.

The Jumbos (13-17) opted for a staff day against the Lions (16-15), and found themselves ahead of the home team immediately. James Henshon continued to carry the Tufts offense with an RBI base hit to score Ben Leonard. Henry Fleckner continued to heat up with an RBI single of his own, scoring Henshon from second. Nick Banner continued to scrounge up RBI as the catcher with an RBI single as well, with AJ Lysko coming home on a throwing error to put the Jumbos up 4-0.

The Lions responded in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own. Cole Donato was the unfortunate victim of the Wheaton grand slam that evened the score. Hunter Beindorff came on in relief to temporarily stop the bleeding, but the bottom of the second saw the Lions tack on another run.

Beindorff was relieved by Emmet Christian, who got a strikeout to end the inning. Christian labored in the bottom of the third inning, and was relieved by Michael O'Brien. O'Brien closed out the inning with only a run against, and was relieved by Liam Wilson at the start of the bottom of the fourth. Wilson struggled, loading up the bases while recording only a single out, prompting Mark Herlihy to relieve him. Herlihy coughed up a pair of runs, and the Lions led 8-4.

From there, things unraveled as the Jumbos bats were stuck in the mud. They were held scoreless until the top of the seventh, at which point the home side led 15-5. Lysko picked up an RBI with a ground out, and Brody Minick added a run with a double down the line to left.

The Jumbos managed to plate three more runs by the end of the game, with Ian Robertson, Leonard and Henshon each adding an RBI. However, it was not enough to close the gap with Wheaton, and the Lions claimed the win with a final score of 17-9.

Tufts will be back in action on the road this weekend, with the NESCAC regular season concluding with a series at Colby College beginning on Friday.
