Women's Rowing Wins Seven of Eight Races on Opening Day at Malden River

MALDEN, MA (April 5, 2025) - The Tufts University women's rowing team won seven of their eight races to open its spring season on Saturday at the first Malden Racing Series on the Malden River. The Jumbos went against Trinity College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a round-robin format.

In the Pocock CRCA Poll for April 1, 2025, Tufts was #1, Trinity #4 and Coast Guard #10. The Jumbos first, third and fourth varsities all won both races. The second varsity split their two races, defeating Coast Guard after falling to Trinity.

The Jumbo first varsity continued a winning streak that included the Head of the Charles Regatta in the fall and the NCAA first varsity race last spring. They had a 6:46.7 time to defeat Trinity (6:52.1) by around two lengths. Then they produced a 30-second win against Coast Guard, finishing in 6:51.8 to 7:21.4 by the Bears. Tufts' 1V8 was coxswain Hannah Jiang with Rose Tinkjian, Janna Moore, Josie Monroe, Emma Lyle, Lucy Howell, Reilly Uiterwyk, Stella Shen and Sami Haynes.

Tufts' second varsity started with loss to Trinity, as the Bantams pulled away for a 7:02.8 victory to 7:10.5 by the Jumbos. They returned later with a 7:15.7 mark that was well ahead of Coast Guard's 7:46.2 finish. For the 2V8 coxswain Maddie Rosato was in front of Lecia Sun, Sydney Barr, Alicia Coble, Nazira Collins, Sophia Brackett, Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso, Natalie Graham and Sophie Cumming.

The third varsity of coxswain Alex Boyer, Ava Elliot, Erica Wayland, Georgia Butler, Brooke Thompson, Sheelyn Pharr, Katherine Tombaugh, Julia Zipoli and Molly Heeney won handily twice for the Jumbos, in times of 7:13.4 (to 7:35.6 by Trinity) and 7:21.4 (to 7:45.6 for Coast Guard).

Similarly significant victories were earned by Tufts' fourth varsity. They raced to a 7:20.4 to 7:41.2 win over Trinity, and a 7:35.6 to 8:08.8 victory versus Coast Guard. Coxswain Rose Lavin, Ashley Brzezenski, Lyra Bornholdt-Collins, Alex Timoney, Claire Carson, Sanjana Rao, Aubyn Mackey, Eva Swei and Cecelia Wilson composed Tufts' fourth varsity.

Tufts' women also raced a fifth varsity boat twice against Jumbo men's fours. The women's times were 7:39.9 and 7:34.5. The lineup for the Jumbos was coxswain Elizabeth Chin with Fiona Smirl, Nosara Maxwell, Ella Tuck, Nora Redding, Sabina Murray, Maddy Wood, Alice Wall an Elise Justman.

Tufts will be back on Malden River next Saturday for races against Bates College, Wesleyan University and Wellesley College.
