Javier Gonzalez stayed in contention for a national title Saturday afternoon, as the duo moved into Sunday morning's NCAA singles and doubles semifinals at Biszantz Family Tennis Center At Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS).
In singles action, Gonzalez stayed alive in the singles draw with a strong win over RPI's Aiden Drover-Mattinen. In the match, Gonzalez won the opening set 6-2 but Drover-Mattinen battled back for a 6-4 win in the second. In the final set, Gonzalez battled back for a 6-3 win to take his spot in the singles semifinals.
Gonzalez will now square off against Denison's Kael Shah at 10 a.m. local time Sunday morning for a shot in the NCAA title match.
In doubles, Gonzalez and Vuksanovic picked up a second round win over Advik Mareedu and Josh Kim from host CMS 6-3, 6-4. The Tufts pair will now take on Pato Garcia Muriel and Stefan Hester of Washington University of St. Louis in the semifinals at 2 p.m. local time in California.
Action begins on Sunday at 10 a.m. in California.
