Women's Rowing 1st Varsity Defeats NESCAC Opponents in Shortened NERC Regatta

WORCESTER, MA (May 3, 2025) - Extremely windy conditions impacted the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) on Lake Quinsigamond today. Though the morning heats were completed, most of the finals were canceled in the afternoon due to unsafe rowing conditions.

The Tufts women's first varsity was the only eight to get a full day of racing in. The Jumbos won their heat, beating Williams College to the finish line with a 7:03.992 mark compared to the Ephs' 7:08.688 finish. In the grand final, Tufts was faster than its four main conference competitors with a 7:56.838 time. Only MIT - a Division I team in rowing - defeated the Jumbos with a first-place 7:53.948 time. Williams was third, nearly 15 seconds behind the Jumbos with an 8:11.535 mark. Trinity College (8:16.433), Wesleyan University (8:20.135) and Bates College (8:27.303) followed.

The Tufts team was coxswain Hannah Jiang with Rose Tinkjian, Sami Haynes, Stella Shen, Reilly Uiterwyk, Lucy Howell, Emma Lyle, Jose Monroe and Sydney Barr.

In the women's second varsity heat, Tufts rowed 7:16.974 for second place and a spot in the grand final. Trinity was in front of Tufts (7:12.566). Tufts' 2V8 had coxswain Maddie Rosato with Julia Zipoli, Sophie Cumming, Sophia Brackett, Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso, Alicia Coble, Brooke Thompson, Lecia Sun and Natalie Graham.

The Jumbo 3V8 won its heat with a time of 8:03.223, over nine seconds faster than Trinity (8:12.499). The Jumbos lined up with coxswain Alex Boyer with Erica Wayland, Molly Heeney, Sheelyn Pharr, Nazira Collins, Ava Elliot, Katherine Tombaugh, Georgia Butler and Sanjana Rao.

Tufts had a pair of eights scheduled to race in a fourth varsity straight final that was canceled.

Due to the number of canceled races, the Point Trophy which is typically presented at NERC was not awarded this year.

The Jumbos will be back at Lake Quinsigamond next Sunday (May 11) for the National Invitational Rowing Championships, which include the NESCAC Championship. The Jumbos are the defending NIRC and NESCAC champions.
