Lucy Mitchell and
Ellie Gershaw and sophomore
Melanie Woodbury moved into the 2024 MIT Invitational Round of 16 Friday, highlighting the first day of action for the Tufts University women's tennis team for the 2025-26 season.
Woodbury, who is the No. 3 seed in the tournament, moved into the third round after knocking off Lillian Moldenhauer of Bowdoin College 6-1, 6-0. Gershaw is the No. 2 seed overall and shook off a stiff challenge in the second round by Bowdoin's Naomi Williams 6-2, 7-6 (4) to advance. Mitchell also had a first-round bye, but knocked off MIT's Carley Chen 7-5, 6-2 in the second round to continue play in the main draw Saturday.
Sophomore
Brooklyn Bindas was a first-round winner over Alicen Liu of MIT 8-4, but then fell to Bowdoin's Suzanne Pogorelec 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. First-year
Alyssa Khou was also a first-round winner with a score of 8-3 over Andrea Voinescu of Amherst College before falling in the second round to Marie Frati of Bowdoin 6-4, 6-0.
Junior
Natalie Hu started her day with an 8-3 win over Phoebe Thorne of MIT, but lost a tough 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (6) decision to Sophia Yang of MIT in the second round. Senior
Nikki Kintiroglou knocked off MIT's Anastasia Samets 8-6 in the opening round, but fell to Amherst's Sophie Diop 6-4, 6-0 in the next round.
Sophomore
Athena Li also was a first-round victor with an 8-5 win over Katja Jules Viberg 8-5, but fell in a battle to Alaina Kolli of MIT 7-6 (3), 6-4.
In doubles' action, Bindas and Li teamed up to knock off Rayna Li and Yang of MIT 8-3 in the first round, while senior
Stephanie Woodbury and first-year
Claudia Grove blanked their opponents 8-0.
Steffy Jullian and Khou also won a tight 8-6 decision in the first round over a Bowdoin duo.
Tufts will continue action Saturday at 9 a.m. in the second of three days at the MIT Invitational.
