CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 13, 2025) -- Senior
Ellie Gershaw and sophomore
Melanie Woodbury highlighted play for the Tufts University women's tennis team at the 2025 MIT Invitational on Saturday, both winning in the main singles' draw to advance to the semifinals on Sunday.
Woodbury, who is the tournament's No. 3 seed, knocked off Amherst College's Sameera Talwar 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16. She then followed that up with another decisive decision in the quarterfinals, knocking off MIT's and No. 5 seed Saina Deshpande 6-1, 6-3. She will now take on Amherst' Tina She Sunday morning.
In the other side of the bracket, Gershaw started the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over MIT's Alaina Kolli. Later in the morning, Gershaw topped No. 9 seed Sophie Diop in a thriller, coming back from down a set to earn a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10) win in an epic 12-10 super tiebreaker. She will now battle Mari Frati of Bowdoin on Sunday.
In the doubles' consolation draw,
Melanie Woodbury and
Ryan Wuhrman posted an 8-1 win in the quarterfinals. They would then follow that with an 8-2 win win over Phoebe Thorne and Lillian Moldenhauer of Bowdoin College to land a spot in Sunday's consolation doubles' final. They will take on Willow Assante-Labash and Suzanne Pogorelec of Bowdoin.
The consolation singles' draw saw some wins as first-year
Claudia Grove picked up a Round of 16 win over Anselma Petrie 7-5, 6-1 to move into the quarterfinals. She then knocked off Karolina Dobiecka of Amherst 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals, Grove won the first set but was forced to retire after the second set.
Junior
Evelina Anastasi also earned a spot in the semis after knocking off teammate
Steffy Jullian 6-4, 6-1, but dropped her semifinal match to Anwitha Duduka of Amherst, 6-4, 6-2.
Action finishes up at the MIT Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m.
