CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 14, 2025) -- Sophomore
Melanie Woodbury completed an unblemished weekend at the 2025 MIT Invitational Sunday, winning the singles' draw to highlight a strong showing for the Tufts University women's tennis squad.
Woodbury started the afternoon with a solid come-from-behind win over Tina She of Amherst College, as she shook off the No. 9 seed to post a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) win in the semifinals to advance to the finals in the afternoon.
On the other side, senior
Ellie Gershaw also punched her ticket to the all-Tufts final in the afternoon as she bested Marie Frati of Bowdoin College in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (1). In the finals, the two Jumbos played well but Woodbury would knock off Gershaw 6-4, 6-4 for the singles' title.
In the consolation draw, sophomore
Athena Li knocked off Rachel Roth 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals but would fall 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) in a super tiebreaker to finish as the runner-up.
In the consolation draw for doubles, Woodbury would pick up another title as she teamed with classmate
Ryan Wuhrman to best Willow Assante-Labash and Suzanne Pogorelec in a thriller 8-7 (5).
Earlier in the weekend, seniors
Lucy Mitchell and
Nikki Kintiroglou were named as the Jumbos' All-Sportsmanship Team representatives.
Tufts gets next weekend off before heading to Middlebury College September 26 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Middlebury, Vermont.
