MEDFORD, MA (January 13, 2026) -- The No. 10 Tufts University women's squash team rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second wave to take a 4-3 lead, but No. 13 Amherst College would snatch the final two matches to knock off the Jumbos 5-4 in a thrilling match from Tufts Squash Center Tuesday afternoon.
The Mammoths (6-1) jumped out ahead in the opening wave, winning at No. 9 and No. 2 but
Anika Goyal came from behind to knock off Kristen Daniel at No. 5 8-11, 11-6, 11-4 and 11-2 to make the score 2-1 heading into the second set of matches. Goyal's win was her team-best sixth of the season.
The Jumbos would take two of the next three matches to finish to pull closer, as senior
Vharsha Dinesh cruised to a win at No. 1 with an 11-7, 11-7 and 11-9 win even her record this season at 3-3. She has also now won two in a row.
Amherst picked up another win at No. 7 as Fionnoula Brandon topped
Sejal Virk 11-7, 11-9 and 11-8 to make it 3-2, but sophomore
Sohni Vermani showed some fight at No. 4 to keep the Jumbos in it. Vermani dropped the first two games but rallied back for a thrilling 8-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5 and 11-9 win at the No. 4 position over Alexandra Brown. Vermani is now 3-0 on the season overall.
Sophomore
Indira Moshi defeated Kate Grissom played a strong match at No. 8 to make it 4-3 Tufts with an 11-9, 3-11, 11-4 and 11-9 victory. It was the third straight win for Moshi on the year. The Jumbos would be able to clinch the win with wins at No. 3 or No. 6, but
Ella Hill's valiant comeback attempt from down two games ended in five with an 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 10-12, 11-2 win by Kanzy Elkaliuoby at No. 3.
The match came down to the action at No. 6, and Yana Sharma was able to outlast
Chloe Bergam in a tight affair that ended 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 and 13-11 to seal the win for the Mammoths.
Tufts will take on No. 14 Georgetown University Friday in Washington, D.C. at 6 p.m. at Squash On Fire Squash Facility.
