WESLEY CHAPEL, FL (January 3, 2026) - Trailing 3-0 in the second period, the Tufts University hockey team rallied to stun ninth-ranked SUNY Geneseo 4-3 in overtime tonight at the Tampa College Hockey Invitational.
With Tufts goalie
Gus Bylin pulled for an extra skater, junior
Eli Pilosof scored with 30 seconds left in the third period to tie the game 3-3. In the three-on-three overtime, junior
Ethan Ullrick scored to complete the 4-3 comeback victory just 43 seconds into the extra session.
The Jumbos improved to 5-5-1 overall while ending a three-game skid. It's the team's fourth win this season against an opponent ranked in the US College Hockey Online poll top 15, including Trinity College, Babson College and the University of New England.
The Knights, who lost for the first time in five games, drop to 9-4-1 overall.
Tufts got off to a good start by outshooting Geneseo 16-10 in the opening period, but could not score.
In the second frame, the Knights took over and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jack McDonald picked the far corner from the top of the right face-off circle to get them started at 2:40. Geneseo got some puck luck on its next two goals. First, the puck sprung out to Sterling Wolters alone in the slot and he drilled it home for a two-goal margin at 6:52 of the period. Then after the disc deflected off a Jumbo to Geneseo's Greg Diamond just outside his own blue line, he sent a pass cross-ice to Alex Dameski who went into the Tufts zone alone down the right side and scored to make it 3-0 with 6:34 left in the second.
Tufts was able to start its comeback less than a minute later.
Jameson Klein sent a long pass from his own end to
Trace Norwell entering the Knights' zone on the right side. He found
Max Resnick in the slot and the Jumbos got on the scoreboard with 5:42 remaining in the second.
The Jumbos then came out flying in the third period, during which they would outshoot Geneseo 15-5. That led to goals by
Liam O'Hare and Pilosof that tied the score.
On O'Hare's goal,
Zach Rizzo intercepted a Knights' clearing attempt and passed it to
John Mulvihill. He moved the puck on to O'Hare in front of the goal and his tally eight minutes into the third closed the gap to 3-2.
That score would hold until the final minute. The Jumbos weren't able to get Bylin out of the net until just 45 seconds remained in regulation. However, in the Knights' end, Resnick took the puck in the left corner and sent it out to
Drew Pitts alone high in the slot. His blast was deflected in by Pilosof in front and the game was tied with 30 seconds left.
On the second Jumbo shift of the overtime, Ullrick took the puck as soon as got on the ice. He drove into the Geneseo zone on the left side, got around a defender to the net, and then made a move across the goal mouth to score the game-winner.
Bylin was a key to the Jumbo win as well, making multiple saves on break-aways and finishing with 25 stops overall. Jacob Torgner was good at the other end for the Knights too, finishing with 39 saves as Tufts had a large advantage in shots overall (43-28).
Nine players had points for Tufts, led by a goal and assist from Resnick. McDonald's goal and assist led eight Geneseo point scorers. Neither team scored on two power-play opportunities each.
The Jumbos return home tomorrow to Medford and will remain in out-of-conference play one more time as they host Endicott College next Saturday.
