AMHERST, MA (October 3, 2026) – The No. 3 ranked Tufts University women's soccer team rolled to a 3-1 victory on the road against NESCAC foe Amherst College to stay unbeaten and scoop up three important points in conference play.
The Jumbos (5-0-2, 3-0-2 NESCAC), have scored early in games all season and continued that pattern this afternoon after
Maile Lung found the back of the net for the second straight game in the seventh minute to put Tufts up, 1-0.
The Mammoths (4-5-0, 0-5-0 NESCAC) knotted the game at one just under four minutes after the Jumbo goal. Katie Peterson intercepted a pass in midfield and threaded a nice through ball to Jessica Lomo, who used her speed to get past the Tufts' defenders and squeak a shot over the leg and under the arm of the incoming
Gigi Edwards.
Amherst went right back on the attack and earned a free kick in their offensive end 30 seconds later. Peterson sent an unexpected low cross right into the middle of the box off the set piece and Caroline Coletti slid to nudge the ball towards goal, but Edwards made a spectacular diving save to keep the match tied at one apiece.
The Jumbos took the lead back at the 27:04 mark of the opening half, following a
Waverly Sumner strike from long range, her team-leading fourth tally of the fall. Amherst attempted to move the ball out of their half, but the Tufts' pressure forced a Mammoth defender to send a ball out of bounds.
Rachel Arcella fed Sumner with a short throw from near midfield, and the senior midfielder took two dribbles and delivered a rising shot from about 40 yards out that flew over the head of Corina Bellerman and into the top left hand corner of the goal.
Tufts entered halftime with a 14-4 difference in the shot department, while also holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Sumner and
Audrey Cromett each put two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Hannah Batt advanced the Jumbo lead to 3-1 in the 49th minute off of a breakaway opportunity. After a miscue with a Mammoth midfielder and defender, Batt ran into a loose ball with no defenders between herself and the netminder, the senior dribbled to the right of the incoming Bellerman, and kicked the ball into the open cage.
The Mammoths nearly cut their deficit back to one with 25:30 left to play after Aubrielle Amaral rocketed a shot from the top of the box, but Edwards, once again, came up clutch for Tufts, tipping the ball over the top of the crossbar four her fourth save of the contest.
Edwards finished her strong performance with six total stops, while
Phoebe Marsick and Lung saw the full 90 minutes of action. Bellerman put together a standout day in net for Amherst, notching 10 saves to keep the game tight.
The Jumbos are set to visit Clinton, NY tomorrow as they will face Hamilton College for another NESCAC match-up at 11 AM.
