No. 3 Women's Soccer Produces 3-0 Clean Sheet Over Hamilton; Edwards Tied For Second All-Time in Shutouts

CLINTON, NY (October 4, 2026) – The No. 3 ranked Tufts University women's soccer team showed off their offensive firepower in the second half, pouring on three scores to fuel a 3-0 NESCAC victory over Hamilton College in conference play on Love Field this afternoon.

The Jumbos (6-0-2, 4-0-2 NESCAC) and the Continentals (7-2-1, 4-2-1 NESCAC) each had their fair share of scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, but both back line's blocked numerous shots and the goalkeeping play from both sides left the scoreboard empty heading into the break.

In the final 90 seconds of the first half, Hamilton earned two consecutive corner kick chances. With 10 tics left to go Kate Giglio sent in the last corner from the right side, finding Sarah Flood who put a header towards the left hand side of the goal, but Gigi Edwards made refuted the shot with a diving effort to keep the match deadlocked at zero. Edwards ended her spectacular first half with four saves.

Hamilton held a 13-6 advantage in the shot department heading into halftime, while also leading four to three in corner kicks, three of which came in the final five minutes. After mostly back-and-forth play in the beginning 30 minutes, the Continentals started sharing the ball well and applying pressure in Tufts' defensive zone before the end of the half.

Maren Jones put the Jumbos out in front, 1-0, just under four minutes into the second half, with an assist coming from Reese Birch. Tufts quickly built up a counterattack that saw Jones racing through midfield with possession, Jones laid off a feed to Birch in the box, Birch gave it back to Jones, and the midfielder shoved it low into the far side of the net.

The Jumbos added to their lead in the 58th minute to give themselves a confident 2-0 cushion. Alyssa Ruiz tossed a throw-in into the box that eventually landed in front of Jones, Jones flashed her playmaking ability and slid a no-look pass to Emily Nicholas, who buried her fourth tally of the fall.

Waverly Sumner put home her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 61:24 mark to put the Jumbos ahead by three. Hannah Batt lofted a perfect delivery over the top of a Hamilton defender, leading Sumner towards goal, and the forward labeled the top right corner of the goal with her right foot.

Edwards collected her third shutout of the season and 24th of her career, which is now tied for second all-time in program history with Randee McArdle (1997-2000).

The Jumbos are back home for another NESCAC contest against the Panthers of Middlebury College on Saturday morning at 11 AM.
