SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 14, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team took their first loss of the season against Trinity University (TX) 6-5 in warm conditions at Trinity Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
For the Jumbos (5-1, 0-0 NESCAC),
Paul McCarthy started on the bump for the second time this season. The first year started off slinging with four strikeouts in two 1-2-3 innings. McCarthy finished the day with five strikeouts, three earned runs allowed, and zero walks.
James Henshon put the Jumbos up 1-0 early in the first inning with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Malcolm Whitfield led off with a double down the left field line on the first pitch of the game and Henshon followed with his single to notch his fourth RBI on the season.
The Jumbos poured on three runs in the top of the second frame to take a 4-0 advantage.
AJ Lysko opened the inning with a single through the right side of the infield.
Brooks Fischer, who replaced
Tate Bannish after an injury in his first at-bat, singled into right field and advanced Lysko to second.
Owen McKiernan hit Tufts' third consecutive single and Lysko scored from second.
Cole Bohane loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch and both Fischer and McKiernan scored on an error from the Tiger's shortstop.
Trinity (TX) cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the third with a two-run single from Khalfani Coney. Mattias Rytting hit a lead-off single into centerfield and John Ramsey followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Coney's single drove in Rytting from third and Ramsey from second base.
The Tigers made it a 4-3 game in the bottom of the fourth frame with a ground out RBI from Nicholas Jones. Sawyer Haynes opened the inning with a single up the middle. McCarthy hit Will Dixon and Rytting to load the bases. Jones' ground out scored a run, but the Jumbos were able to convert the 6-4-3 double play which lead to only one conceded run in the inning with the bases filled and no outs.
Will Baker tied the game at four with an RBI single into right center field that scored Kaleb Woodward from second. Jack Henning gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead in the same frame with a single through the right side of the infield that drove home Baker from third.
Tufts brought the game back to even at five after
Malcolm Whitfield doubled for his third hit of the day and eventually crossed home on a passed ball in the top half of the seventh.
Michael O'Brien, who relieved McCarthy in the fifth inning, delivered back-to-back critical 1-2-3 seventh and eighth innings which included a strikeout to keep the game tied.
Michael Lustina handed Tufts their first loss of the season with a walk-off RBI single to left center that scored Kaleb Woodward from third.
Whitfield looked strong at the plate as the only multi-hit player for the Jumbos, going 3-for-5 with two doubles. The catcher now leads Tufts in hits with eight in 23 plate appearances.
Tufts will stay in San Antonio and battle Trinity University (TX) again tomorrow at 3 PM.
