MEDFORD, MA (March 20, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team took a 10-4 defeat versus Russell Sage in windy conditions at Sol Gittleman Park in non-conference action on Friday afternoon.
The Jumbos (8-2, 0-0 NESCAC) started with
Paul McCarthy on the hill as the opening arm for his third start of the season. McCarthy found himself in a jam early with the bases loaded in the top of the first, but the first year was able to keep Sage off the board. McCarthy was relieved by
Mark Herlihy after the first inning. Herlihy was in command during his time on the bump, finishing with 3 strikeouts, 4 hits against, and 1 earned run allowed in 5.2 innings of throwing.
Tufts' offense continues to produce runs early, this time with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
Malcolm Whitfield started the inning off by reaching first on an error by the Gator's shortstop.
Jack Kamin and
James Henshon filled up the bases after being walked consecutively.
Tate Bannish brought home Whitfield and Kamin with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.
Sage cut the Jumbos advantage in half in the top half of the second to make it a 2-1 score. Connor Griffin crossed home after an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Jayden Kennedy. Griffin reached base earlier in the with a single into right center field.
Evan Grimes held the Tufts' batters to just one hit through three innings of play with three strikeouts. Grimes was also a standout at the plate, leading the Gators in hits in today with two.
The Jumbos added one run to their total in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 game. Kamin stayed hot at the plate with a single up the middle to lead off. Henshon immediately followed up with a single of his own into right center field and reached second on the throw, advancing Kamin to third.
Max Pavlik loaded the bases with a walk and
Owen McKiernan brought Kamin home with a walk as well.
Kamin put the Jumbos up 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single up the middle. McCullough scored on the hit from third base after he singled, stole second, and reached third on a wild pitch.
Sage flipped the script in the top of the eighth, piling on 8 runs on 8 hits in the frame to take a 9-4 lead. The Gators also added a run in the top half of the ninth inning to make it 10-4.
Kamin extended his hit streak to five games with his single in the bottom of the fifth. Kamin (2-for-4), Henshon (3-for-4), and McCullough (2-for-4) all collected multiple hits in the loss.
The Jumbos host Suffolk University tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
