Tufts Baseball Rolls To A Home Sweep Over Suffolk

MEDFORD, MA (March 21, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team swept Suffolk University in a doubleheader matchup in sunny conditions at Sol Gittleman Park as the Jumbos captured their ninth and tenth wins of the season.

The Jumbos (10-2, 0-0 NESCAC), started game one with Emmet Christian on the mound. Christian started off looking comfortable by striking out four out of the first six batters he faced through the first two innings. The sophomore finished with a career-high seven strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of action.

Tufts opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Max Pavlik led off with a single into right field and Owen McKiernan followed with a SAC bunt to advance Pavlik to second. Jesse McCullough scored Pavlik from second with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Malcolm Whitfield scored Gavin Lind and McCullough with a two-run double into deep left field. Jack Kamin kept his hot bat alive and added on the final Jumbos run of the inning with an RBI single into left field to score Whitfield.

The Rams would not go away and put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Cole Hilliard led off by reaching first on an error by the Jumbos' third baseman. Sam Armbuster blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence to make it a 4-2 game.

Kamin gave the Jumbos a run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double into left center field that scored Whitfield. Whitfield tripled to open the inning for Tufts.

Luke Thornton hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth for Suffolk to cut their deficit to two with one inning left to hit.

Derek Desmarais relieved Christian in the top of the seventh inning and notched the save by striking out one batter in one inning to close out Game 1.

In Game 2, Cole Donato got the opportunity to start for his third time this season. The senior was in complete command, finishing with a season-high seven strikeouts while shutting out Suffolk's offense by allowing just three hits in 6.0 innings of play. Mitchell Hwang replaced Donato in the top of the seventh and struck out one batter in just an inning of throwing.

The Jumbos scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 4-0 advantage. Tufts went on to add one run in the bottom of the third and five runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game with a mercy rule.

Whitfield was dangerous at the plate today, going 3-for-7 with a double, triple, and four RBIs. Kamin went 3-for-9 at the dish today and holds an impressive .485 batting average in 33 at-bats this season.

Tufts is back to it on Tuesday at home against UMass Boston at 3 PM.
